The 5 C’s of Argumentative Essay Writing: How to Create a Great Argument

To help my college writing students understand the attitude needed for creating a strong argumentative essay, I invented the “5 C’s” device, which emphasizes clarity, candor, confidence, control, and comprehension.

Clarity. Be direct and straightforward in your argumentative writing. Directness results in clarity. Use your own language, plainly and accurately. Never use words of which you don’t know the exact meaning. Avoid tortured or overstuffed sentences always. Don’t waste time getting straight to the point. Don’t keep your audience in suspense; suspense is for mystery novels, not for argumentative essays.

Candor. Make it your mission to be honest with your readers. Give readers something they can actually use in the real world: hard-won advice, useful facts that you’ve discovered, a careful description of problems, and actionable solutions to those problems. Level with your readers about important information that less courageous writers would rather not write about.

Confidence. Be both calm and firm about the rightness of your argument. Don’t demand that readers agree with you; ironically, such an approach shows lack of confidence. Invite readers to agree with you and congratulate them for choosing your firm side. Acknowledge opposing points of view, but refute them immediately and resolutely. Read classic writers who argue with calm confidence, whether or not you agree with them, such as Machiavelli in The Prince, and steal their attitudes.

Control. A) Don’t get distracted or go off track. Deploy the power of understatement. A strong argument has more impact when discussed matter-of-factly than when screamed or shouted. Don’t quote others excessively. Always retain the first word and last word of every paragraph for yourself. B) Balance the structure of your essay. Each section of the essay should have a specific role. When it fulfills that role, move on. Avoid overly long paragraphs generally; especially avoid overly long first and last paragraphs. To prevent an overloaded beginning that merely confuses readers, avoid explaining yourself in the first paragraph. Dare your readers to be interested in the rest of your essay beyond the beginning. Let your first paragraph establish your topic and your thesis only, and move swiftly to the middle paragraphs where all your explaining should happen.

Comprehension. Whatever your topic, proactively show readers that you understand it well. Be both a helpful guide through complex issues and an informed judge when choices must be made. Cover your territory fully and give readers information that they’re not likely to know. Generous sharing of useful, real-world knowledge is the fastest way to establish trust with your audience. Never forget the ultimate goal, which is to contribute your wisdom freely and help your readers sincerely.

J M Coetzee – Style and Narrative Technique in Novel Disgrace

Literature provides us some light in the darkness. The great thinkers and their writings have upgraded literature to the level of religion in secularized section of people. Keeping pace with this movement for providing primal education, J. M. Coetzee, a Nobel Prize winner writer, has carved out a striking example in his novel ‘Disgrace’. It is the strongest part of the story woven in his novel ‘Disgrace’ that he does not allow the protagonist to run away. Under the given circumstances he had option to get away with the inquiry set up against him. Instead he accepts the responsibility for what he has done.

The visual metaphors used in narrating the scenes carry us at the place and in the time where characters of novel are struggling to live. Nowhere the narration seems very dramatic. The Lucy’s rape, an act of the highest insult a man can do to a woman, is narrated in a few lines. These lines are emphatically convincing. The challenges the characters in ‘Disgrace’ face are just like other common people. But their responses to these challenges are quite different. That is how the literature in general and a writer in particular provide us the light in darkness. Coetzee narrates this darkness in a very impressive manner.

J M Coetzee is master of the art of telling the stories. He makes the readers feeling immediately identified with the characters. In ‘Disgrace’, the writer puts us in the midst of an environment in which events are happening. The vivid description of college activities and the way in which students behave with their studies make us believe the scenes. They all look like the parts of our day-to-day life.

Novels written by Coetzee are filled with irony and satire. His writings entertain the readers according to their intellectual heights. In the case of ‘Disgrace’, the thematic compulsions and perpetual happenings of sad events restrained him becoming an outright humorist. But he has counterbalanced it by putting lightweight words in the blank spaces lying between two sentences.

Have you paid attention to the real estate prospecting letters you get in the mail?

Most of those real estate letters begin by breaking the #1 rule in copywriting: It isn’t about you.

Because those agents think the letters are about them, they begin the very first sentence with the word “I” or “We.”

As a result, a huge percentage of people begin reading the letter with a thought or feeling of “Why should I care about you?” or maybe “Yeah, so what? Who are you to me?”

The truth is, your prospects don’t give a hoot about you. They want to hear about themselves. The only reason they’ll read your letter is to see what benefit it holds for them.

You could say “My doctor says I’ll be dead by Tuesday unless you list your house with me,” and it wouldn’t budge them a bit. They’d think “Sorry, that’s not my problem.”

That’s a little extreme. But you get what I mean.

So there’s the first big mistake. And most of the time, from there it doesn’t get any better.

Those letters might go on to say how many listings an agent has or how many dollars worth of real estate he or she has sold. It might even mention their “alphabet soup” designations – which don’t mean a thing to most homeowners.

It’s all just more of the “me, me, me” message that doesn’t interest prospects in the least.

So what can you do instead?

You can write about their concerns and worries. You can show them that you recognize their problems, and then explain what you’ll do to help solve those problems.

Your approach will naturally be different if you’re writing to a “cold” group of homeowners in a specific neighborhood as opposed to say, a group of people with expired listings or a list of homeowners who have received a notice of default.

When you know what specific problems those homeowners have, it’s easier to show how you’ll solve them.

But even if you’re writing to a mixed farming area and don’t know what problems they need to solve, you can appeal to their curiosity and interest.

For instance, you can offer information about what’s been happening in that neighborhood. You can let them know how many homes are for sale or have sold in the past month or so. You can share average prices. You can tell them if prices are up or down from last month, or last quarter. And then you can offer to put them on your list for periodic updates.

Almost as an afterthought, you can let them know that you’d be happy to prepare a market analysis if they’re considering selling their home.

Today, successful marketing is all about giving something before you ask for anything. You have knowledge and advice. Give them freely.

Most certainly, if that recorded thought is used, recompense must be made.

Having heard the justifications of the plagiarist and weighed against our concepts of civil society, it is our judgment that all convicted plagiarists should be made to listen to the troubles of the original author.

How to Choose the Right Words For More Colorful Writing

Putting together sentences and paragraphs is one thing. Knowing which words help you craft more colorful lines and stronger arguments is a whole other skill. Sometimes, your English writing software can help you make that choice; mostly, though, you will have to choose your own words thoughtfully.

There are many ways to choose the right words for the job. The one guideline you should always keep in mind, though, is to recognize general language and replace them with more specific words. While it’s not probably not a good idea to do this for every instance, using specific terms in majority of your piece should lead to both a clearer and livelier writing style.

Specific verbs. You’ve probably learned about passive verbs already. Focusing on “being” rather than “doing,” they lack the action that can potentially make your constructions sound more vibrant. As always, look towards choosing active verbs, instead of passive if you’d like your sentences to sound clearer and more alive.

Apart from these, look for ways you can make your use of verbs more specific. Instead of saying a teacher “taught a class,” for instance, you can say the same person “discussed the principles behind 80s-era Russia’s foreign policies.”

Specific adjectives and adverbs. Probabilistic adjectives, ones whose actual meanings denote several specific possibilities, are the biggest transgressors here. Descriptors such as “many,” “common” and “possible” are examples of these general modifiers, all of which can actually cause more confusion than clarity, which is what adjectives and adverbs are supposed to do in the first place.

Specific nouns. Many writers who watch out for the general use of verbs and modifiers do tend to overlook the same problem with their use of nouns. This happens frequently, especially when referring to groups of people or things. Avoid using vague nouns like “someone” and “persons,” as well as pronouns like “this,” “that” and “they.”
